NPM Construction tendered and were awarded the contract to build a 301m², three classroom Health & PE Block including break out spaces and toilet facilities (staff, student & accessible). Construction works included reinforced concrete floor foundations, building construction, drainage, concrete pavements, stormwater retention pit, driveway & carpark area. There was also an existing small building to be removed.
The main challenge for this project was the live school environment. Risks to the students and staff were minimised by controlling all vehicle movements to particular times of the day and creating a new access route to the swimming pool, which diverted them away from the construction site.
The project was completed ahead of schedule on what was considered an extremely tight timeframe. The finishing included feature patterns in the Autex acoustic internal wall lining to give the building a striking appearance and add colour to create the learning environment that the Ministry of Education strives for.
Effective communication between all stakeholders (school, project managers, designers and ourselves) meant that the project flowed smoothly and was completed to a very high standard. The project was delivered ahead of schedule which was a great achievement based on the short contract period.
The school was very happy with the outcome.
“We are delighted with the workmanship and quality finish of the new build. NPM showed an attention to detail and were fastidious with finishing work.
Secondly, we were impressed by the professionalism of NPM. They had excellent systems in place for Health and Safety, and for overall management of the project. This was particularly important to us as the build was in school time.
They liaised well with the school and Project Managers and were obliging in adapting and providing small extras and alterations. Nothing was too much trouble.
Having managed property at Whangarei Girls High for 14 years, this was one of the easiest and most satisfying construction projects I have been involved with, largely due to NPM’s professionalism.
The school has no hesitation in recommending NPM as a most suitable builder to the Education sector, or other commercial sectors.” – Kevin Dean, Deputy Principal, Whangarei Girls High School
