GHK Piling are bridge construction experts who have constructed many of Northland road bridges you use every day. We have the plant, personnel and expertise to complete all aspects of bridge construction.
State Highway Bridges
GHK Piling have experience building bridges to the NZTA HN-HO-72 loading criteria and to the NZTA Bridge Manual. We are pre-qualified with the NZTA for bridge construction and the local bridge building contractor of choice for Northland for the last 50 years. We have a team with strong experience in bridge construction covering piling, reinforced concrete abutments and piers, precast & prestressed bridge beam placement, transfer stressing and bridge deck placement. Our familiarity with most local geotechnical conditions means we are able to develop effective methodologies to ensure projects are successful.
Single Span – Farm or Subdivision Bridges
For simple single span bridges, we are able to work with structural engineers to provide a design and construct service to ensure that the outcome is cost effective by using designs which we have already developed and thus making the design and construction process streamlined. Together with the structural engineer we can design, produce construction drawings and obtain the building consent from the appropriate Local Authority prior to the on-site construction process.
For these straightforward structures that span bank-to-bank and do not encroach on the stream waterway area, a resource consent from the Regional Council is not normally required. For more complicated bridges, we employ the services of specialist consultants to complete the paperwork and consent/permit process.
We offer a range of solutions depending on requirements including the full range of construction materials including concrete, steel and timber (or any combination of the three) depending on what suits the application and client budgets.
GHK Piling have been constructing farm and private bridges for Northlanders for over 50 years so know the area, the ground conditions and can recommend the option that will best suit each application.
Foot Bridges and Cycle Bridges
Foot bridges and cycle bridges can range in scale, material and construction methodology depending on the application. GHK Piling have experience in construction of a broad range of footbridges including the Waiarohia Footbridge, named Kotuitui Whitinga, at the Whangarei Town Basin (concrete filled steel piles, precast pier stems, structural steel substructure, precast concrete deck and stainless steel architectural spec handrails) and Te Mai footbridge in Raumanga (timber pile, reinforced concrete abutment, steel substructure, timber decking and steel and timber handrails). The Kotuitui Whitinga Footbridge was awarded the Civil Contractors New Zealand National Construction Excellence Award for projects between $1m and $5m.
GHK Piling are proficient in best practice construction methodologies for all bridging applications and materials.
Concrete Deck Bridges
Concrete Deck bridges tend to suit the environments where a low maintenance solution is required. Concrete bridges can be engineered for any load and these bridges offer a hard wearing solution. The useful range of these bridges span 6 m – 26 m, with multi span options available.
Various construction options are available with this type of bridge. GHK Piling have the experience to construct all aspects of a bridge including the piles, reinforced concrete abutments and pier caps, hollow core deck slabs and topping slabs or stitch joints. GHK Piling are one of the few Northland based contractors to be approved for bridge construction with NZTA.
